Golf has been played on this stretch of linksland since at least 1616, and Royal Dornoch Golf Club itself was founded in 1877. Old Tom Morris extended the course to 18 holes in 1886, and it was here that a young Donald Ross learned the trade before taking his signature raised, domed greens to America – most famously to Pinehurst No. 2. Today the Championship Course plays to a par of 70 over 6,799 yards.
I am a member at Royal Dornoch so maybe I am a bit biased when it comes to the Championship Course. In my opinion (and the opinion of almost every ranking capacity) this is one of the best golf courses in the world. The reason for this is quite simple: The Championship Course has it all. Great views, great holes and great hospitality. At £360 for the green fee in 2026 (rising to £390 in 2027) it is everything but cheap, but if you compare it with other courses ranked in the worldwide Top 20 it is a real bargain. A 100% recommendation.
