Willie Park Jr. laid out the Medal Course in 1903; it was renamed “1562” in 2018 after the earliest documented record of golf being played here – a local boy was taught the game at that age in that year.
The course has some very nice holes with views of the North Sea. My favorite hole is the third. A par 3 with a green on a dune plateau. A real card wrecker, I would say. According to the Montrose Golf Links website, the course is the fifth oldest in the world. According to my own experience, the clubhouse is the fifth ugliest in the world. I still thought it was great. Because it’s so weird. And of course, and once again, because even in ugly clubhouses, Scots are just incredibly nice people.
