Gullane

No. 2

Golf has been played at Gullane since 1650, though the club itself wasn’t founded until 1882. The reigning Open Champion Willie Park Jr. laid out Course No. 2 in 1898 for a fee of ten guineas. It has since hosted national amateur championships and The Open Final Qualifying.

In 2015 No. 2 contributed two holes to a composite Championship course used for the Scottish Open.

When we teed off on No. 2 at Gullane, the wind was really blowing hard. It was still good fun playing there – or rather, hitting balls into the rough. I particularly remember the final hole. A par 4 measuring 305 yards. I managed to reach it with my first shot. Which says less about my skill than it does about the wind.
