Bundoran

Bundoran Golf Club was founded in 1894, making it one of the oldest clubs in Ireland. C.S. Butchart extended it to a full 18 holes by 1903, and six-time Open Champion Harry Vardon visited in 1927 to further improve the layout, working to his stated philosophy “to give pleasure to golfers of all degrees.” Christy O’Connor Snr served as club professional from 1951 to 1957.

The course was one of the first international layout I have ever played while traveling around Ireland in 2008. I must admit I have limited memories, but what I still remember very clearly is the massive green bunker at the short par 4 5th «O’Connor’s Dell». I tried hard but was unable to bring the ball back into play. When I asked the two members I played with how they usually handle the bunker, they said they use the “hand wedge”.
