Castlerock

Mussenden

Castlerock takes its name from the nearby Mussenden Temple. The club was founded in April 1901 as a nine-hole course; Scottish clubmaker Ben Sayers extended it to 18 holes by 1908, and Harry Colt is understood to have advised on the layout in the 1920s while working on nearby Royal Portrush. Martin Hawtree redesigned six holes of the Mussenden Links in 2017/18.

I played there in early April and was a bit disappointed, I must say. While some of the holes are really downright beautiful, I found a green fee of 175£ (climbing to 250£ during the main season) despite playing from the first cut to be just way too high. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking for a third links experience in the far north of Northern Ireland, alongside Portstewart and Royal Portrush.
